We feel very strongly about this mission and are embarking on a strategy to oppose a solar field development project along Deer Park Road (near Louisville Road). Recent statewide regulations allow approved solar fields to be built in unused or “remaining portions” of land previously zoned for agriculture only. The project that is currently in the design and planning stage will include 15 acres of metal and silicon solar panels that will be adjacent to and visible from our homes. The entire field could be surrounded by a chain link fence and will significantly detract from the area’s natural beauty and could negatively impact our home values let alone the quiet enjoyment of where we live. We do not believe this particular area is best suited for a project like this as there are significant locations statewide where such development could occur without disrupting local neighbors.
Additionally, the proposed site falls within the Liberty Reservoir Watershed that not only serves as a habitat for fish and wildlife, but is major drinking water source for Baltimore City. Protection of this watershed has long been a top priority for both Carroll and Baltimore Counties. It is imperative to the health of the environment and the citizens dependent on this watershed that the impacts of runoff from a community based solar system to the water quality of the reservoir and ecologically sensitive and threatened species within the watershed is thoroughly studied and understood.
